A tragic explosion at an Oak Cliff apartment complex in Dallas has claimed the lives of three individuals, including two women and a child. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Victims Identified
Among the deceased are Marisol Perez and her 18-month-old son, Erick. Family members confirmed that they were unable to escape their apartment. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist with their funeral expenses. The identity of the third victim has not yet been released, but friends and family suspect it may be Sylvia Collins, a longtime Dallas County Democratic Party precinct chair who has been missing since the explosion.
The Dallas County Democratic Party plans to hold a candlelight vigil for Collins on Friday night outside Adamson High School, honoring her contributions to the community.
Injuries and Rescue Efforts
Five individuals were injured in the explosion, with one in critical but stable condition. The other four sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover. Neighbor Rodney Brown played a heroic role by rescuing a young girl from the flames, although he was unable to return for her mother and siblings due to the spreading fire.
Community Impact
The explosion has left many residents displaced and grieving the loss of their homes and pets. Oak Cliff resident Kacee lost all her belongings, including her 14-year-old cat, Shirley. Alta DeBose also mourns the loss of three cats and two dogs, though she and her husband were not home at the time of the explosion.
Dallas Fire-Rescue Chief Justin Ball confirmed that all residents have been accounted for after thorough searches with cadaver dogs and drones. The building housed 23 units, 19 of which were occupied.
The community continues to rally around the affected families, offering support and assistance during this difficult time.
