TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo Lucas County Public Library is preparing to welcome residents to a brand‑new Washington Branch at 3025 Alexis Road. The nearly 20,000‑square‑foot facility, situated on an eight‑acre site, will replace the former branch on Harvest Lane and is slated to open its doors on Saturday, Dec. 5.
Designed for Families and All Ages
Library CEO Jason Kucsma highlighted the family‑focused design, saying, “We got an incredible children’s area, a large adult collection, places to find cozy little nooks to do their reading.” The new building offers expanded collections, updated technology and flexible gathering spaces that cater to toddlers, school‑age children, teens and adults alike.
Community Input Shaped the Project
Feedback from local residents played a central role in shaping the branch. In 2024, 251 community members completed a survey, and a 2025 town hall attracted another 100 participants. Their ideas helped prioritize accessibility, with the library aiming to exceed Americans with Disabilities Act standards and create a welcoming environment for every visitor.
Economic Boost for Lucas County
The Washington Branch is the first phase of the library’s $153 million “Building for the Future” plan, a multi‑year effort to modernize library services across Lucas County. According to data from Bowling Green State University’s Center for Regional Development, the construction project has already generated an estimated $14.4 million in total economic output, including more than $6 million in wages and benefits for local construction and trade workers.
Reaching New Neighbors
Kucsma emphasized the strategic location, noting that moving the branch to Alexis Road will bring library services to a broader segment of the community. “Any time we can reach new people and bring them into the libraries … we’re anticipating a lot of new library visitors, and we look forward to welcoming them all into the branch,” he said.
What to Expect When the Doors Open
Patrons can look forward to a modern children’s area equipped with age‑appropriate books, interactive learning stations and comfortable reading nooks. Adults will find a spacious collection of fiction, non‑fiction and digital resources, as well as meeting rooms for community groups, study sessions and civic events. The design also includes ample parking, outdoor seating and fully accessible restrooms.
Supporting Strong Neighborhoods
The new Washington Branch reflects the library system’s commitment to traditional families and the values that strengthen neighborhoods. By providing a safe, educational space where parents can read with their children and seniors can attend lifelong‑learning programs, the library continues to be a cornerstone of community life.
Looking Ahead
As the library prepares for the December opening, officials encourage residents to explore the new facility and take advantage of the expanded services. The project demonstrates how thoughtful public‑investment can create jobs, support local economies and enrich the lives of families throughout Toledo and Lucas County.
