Actor Martha Plimpton sat down with On The Red Carpet to talk about her latest television role as Sheriff Vela Thorn, the no‑nonsense law‑enforcement leader introduced in episode four of the FX series “The Lowdown”. Plimpton said the character has “worked her way up” and combines charm with a hard edge, making her a compelling addition to Woodrell County’s fictional landscape.
Creating a memorable sheriff
Plimpton explained that the first step in bringing Vela Thorn to life was a visual one. “The one thing I was sure we were gonna do was get me a nice, good, long, fresh manicure. And when I put on those tight Wrangler jeans and that big belt buckle, I’d say, you know, Vela was born,” she recalled.
She emphasized that Thorn is both a skilled negotiator and a tough police officer, noting, “She knows how to be tough and knows how to take care of business.” The actress added that the sheriff’s storyline is set to take “a very, very dark turn,” hinting at future twists that will deepen the season’s central mystery.
How the sheriff fits into the season’s plot
The season follows public defender Ginger Lafferty (Betty Gilpin) and former cop Lee Raybon (Ethan Hawke) as they search for a missing inmate named Mekko. Their investigation uncovers a web of questionable cops, a dead child, and a shadowy figure who may be pulling the strings. While the full extent of Sheriff Thorn’s involvement remains under wraps, Plimpton teased that her character has “worked her way into a situation that is a little dicey,” suggesting she will play a pivotal role in unraveling the mystery.
Working with creator Sterlin Harjo
Plimpton, a longtime admirer of creator Sterlin Harjo’s work, said she jumped at the chance to join the series despite a busy schedule that included projects in Europe. “He’s just a very relaxed and confident guy, you know. And he’s a very talented storyteller. He writes about, you know, the world and people that he knows,” she said, praising Harjo’s writing and the collaborative atmosphere on set.
She also reflected on her long‑standing friendship with co‑star Ethan Hawke, noting, “It’s wonderful working with Ethan. I love him to death. I’ve known him since we were 15 or 16 and we’ve worked together many times over the years, but never on a show like this, never on TV.” Their chemistry, she believes, adds depth to the series’ dramatic tension.
