Texas Tech Announces Free Homecoming Concert Featuring Goo Goo Dolls and Bowling for Soup

Texas Tech University is bringing a taste of 1990s rock to Lubbock for its annual Homecoming celebration. On Friday, October 16, the campus will host a free concert featuring the Goo Goo Dolls and Bowling for Soup, two bands that helped define a generation of pop‑rock.

Schedule of events

The evening will begin with a parade that rolls down Avenue V and Broadway, passing the main entrance to the university. Following the parade, a pep rally will be held in Urbanovsky Park, leading into a massive bonfire later that night. Gates for the concert open at 6 p.m., and food trucks will be on site to serve concert‑goers.

About the performers

The Goo Goo Dolls, formed in the mid‑1980s, rose to fame in the 1990s with hits such as “Name” and “Iris.” With millions of records sold worldwide and seven singles that reached the Billboard Hot 100’s top 40, the band promises to energize the crowd with a mix of classic hits and newer material.

Bowling for Soup, a Texas‑born group from nearby Wichita Falls, broke through in the early 2000s. Their most recognizable song, “1985,” comes from the 2004 album A Hangover You Don’t Deserve. Younger fans may also know the band from the theme song they performed for the Disney Channel series Phineas and Ferb.

Why this matters to the community

Homecoming is a long‑standing tradition that unites current students, alumni, faculty and the broader Lubbock community. By offering a free, family‑friendly concert, Texas Tech provides an affordable cultural experience that aligns with the values of traditional families and community togetherness. The event also supports local vendors, as food trucks and other small businesses will have the opportunity to serve thousands of attendees.

University officials say the concert is part of a broader effort to celebrate the university’s heritage while giving back to the city that hosts the Red Raiders. “We want to create a memorable experience that brings together generations of Red Raider fans,” said a spokesperson for Texas Tech’s Office of Student Affairs.

Additional Homecoming activities

Beyond the concert, the week includes a series of events such as a homecoming football game against Arizona State at Galaxy Stadium, a series of student‑leadership workshops, and a showcase of student organizations. A full schedule can be found on the university’s Homecoming webpage.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to arrive early for parking and to take advantage of the free concert and bonfire. With the combination of music, tradition and community spirit, Texas Tech’s Homecoming week promises to be a highlight of the fall season in Lubbock.
