Bentonville High School launches new construction lab for student apprentices

Bentonville High School is expanding its Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings with a brand‑new construction laboratory. The lab, financed by local contractor Crossland Construction, will serve 90 students during its inaugural year, providing direct access to professional woodworking equipment, saw stations and other industry‑standard tools.

Hands‑on learning for future builders

Students who enroll in the lab will work with the same machinery used on real construction sites, allowing them to develop practical skills that go far beyond classroom theory. “They’re going to get a head start on construction as a career, because they’re going to have that knowledge way earlier than somebody like me had it, for example,” said a speaker at the opening ceremony.

Career pathways and community support

The partnership with Crossland Construction reflects a growing trend of local businesses investing in the next generation of skilled workers. By exposing students to the tools and techniques of the trade early, the program aims to create a pipeline of qualified candidates for the region’s booming building industry.

Beyond the technical training, the lab introduces participants to a variety of construction‑related occupations, from framing and cabinetry to project management and safety compliance. This broader perspective helps students make informed decisions about post‑secondary education and career choices.

CTE’s role in Bentonville’s education landscape

The construction lab is part of Bentonville High School’s larger CTE initiative, which seeks to equip students with marketable skills that align with local economic needs. The district has emphasized career readiness as a core component of its mission, recognizing that not every graduate will pursue a traditional four‑year college path.

Community leaders praised the effort, noting that hands‑on programs like this strengthen families by providing stable, well‑paid job opportunities for young adults. “When our kids have the tools and training to succeed, our whole community benefits,” said a school board member.

Looking ahead

While the lab will initially accommodate 90 students, school officials hope to expand enrollment as demand grows. They also plan to integrate additional certifications and safety courses, further aligning the curriculum with industry standards.

With the construction lab now open, Bentonville High School reinforces its commitment to practical education, preparing students to enter the workforce with confidence and competence.
