Texas School for the Blind Partners with Waymo to Enhance Accessibility

The Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI) has been instrumental in shaping accessibility features for Waymo’s autonomous vehicles. This collaboration began in 2022, offering Waymo valuable insights into the needs of the blind and low-vision community in Austin.

TSBVI Superintendent Emily Coleman highlighted the school’s role in providing user-specific data that Waymo might not have otherwise obtained. The partnership aligns with TSBVI’s mission to teach students, ranging from ages 7 to 22, how to navigate public transportation and ride-hailing services like Uber or Lyft. For students, especially those 18 and older, learning to independently book rides is a crucial skill for future success.

Enhancing Mobility for Independence

Mobility is a significant barrier to employment and social activities for individuals with disabilities. Coleman emphasized the importance of training students to move independently, setting them up for future success. Waymo’s vehicles, equipped with features like turn-by-turn directions and a unique horn honking melody, help blind or low-vision riders locate their rides more easily.

Amanda Ventura from Waymo’s public affairs team noted that some features, such as robust audio descriptions, benefit all users, not just those with visual impairments. These descriptions provide real-time updates on the vehicle’s actions, enhancing the riding experience for everyone.

Addressing Challenges and Looking Ahead

Despite the advancements, challenges remain. TSBVI alum and current employee Marcus Cardwell, who is blind, regularly uses Waymo for commuting. He acknowledges some difficulties with the Uber app, which is used to access Waymo in Austin, as it lacks certain accessibility features present in the Waymo app. Additionally, navigating pick-up and drop-off locations can be tricky due to varying layouts.

Nevertheless, the partnership between TSBVI and Waymo represents a significant step forward in providing independence to blind riders. Cardwell appreciates the autonomy Waymo offers, eliminating the need to rely on others for transportation. As accessibility features continue to evolve, the collaboration promises to enhance the quality of life for many in the blind and low-vision community.
