Bastrop’s SH 71 Corridor Sees Retail and Medical Expansion

Bastrop, Texas, is witnessing a surge in development along the SH 71 corridor, with three major projects underway: Sendero, Burleson Crossing East, and Bastrop West. These developments promise to enhance the local economy and meet the growing needs of the community.

Sendero: A Mixed-Use Development

Sendero is emerging as one of Bastrop’s largest mixed-use projects, spearheaded by Houston-based Pearl River Companies. This 75-acre development aims to create a vibrant destination for residents and visitors alike, offering opportunities to live, work, shop, and dine. Construction began in April 2025, and the first business, Chuy’s, opened its doors on May 18, 2026. The project will eventually include a hotel and approximately 90,000 square feet dedicated to health and wellness services.

Bastrop Mayor Ishmael Harris emphasized the importance of thoughtful planning in these developments, ensuring they strengthen the local economy and maintain the community’s appeal. Mason Mote, a Bastrop native and co-founder of Pearl River Companies, expressed gratitude for the community’s support as Sendero takes shape.

Burleson Crossing East: Retail and Dining Hub

Burleson Crossing East is set to become a bustling shopping center, covering nearly 20 acres. The development is expected to create over 300 jobs and contribute significantly to Bastrop’s general fund through property and sales taxes. LongHorn Steakhouse was the first business to open in this development, followed by Sprouts Farmers Market and First Watch. Becki Womble, President of the Bastrop Regional Chamber of Commerce, highlighted that these openings reflect the community’s growth and evolving needs.

Bastrop West: Future Medical and Convention Facilities

Bastrop West is under review for a potential hotel-convention center and a full-service hospital. City-backed feasibility studies, approved by the Bastrop City Council, are ongoing to assess the viability of these projects. City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino reported positive findings from the studies, and the council is set to receive further updates in July.

These developments are part of Bastrop’s broader strategy to expand its commercial base and accommodate population growth. Additional projects are planned in Bastrop County, including a 189-acre redevelopment in Cedar Creek. As Becki Womble noted, these investments signal confidence in Bastrop’s future.
