Texans pause C.J. Stroud contract talks until offseason if no deal by Sept. 13

Houston – The Houston Texans made it clear Tuesday that any extension talks with quarterback C.J. Stroud will stop once the regular season begins if the two sides cannot seal a deal before the Sept. 13 opening game against the Buffalo Bills. General manager Nick Caserio said the club will resume negotiations only in the next offseason.

Current contract status

The organization exercised Stroud’s fifth‑year option last year, which keeps the 24‑year‑old under team control through the 2027 season. That move gave the Texans flexibility while they evaluate a long‑term commitment.

Potential extension on the table

Caserio told reporters at the start of training camp in late July that there was “a chance the sides could come to terms on an extension,” but he added that no agreement appears imminent. The front office wants to avoid distractions during the crucial early weeks of the schedule.

Stroud’s performance and playoff pedigree

Since being selected with the second overall pick in the 2023 draft, Stroud has guided Houston to the playoffs in each of his three seasons as a starter. He posted a 28‑18 record, earned AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2023, and completed a career‑best 64 % completion rate in 2025 as the Texans finished 12‑5 and advanced to the divisional round.

Despite those successes, Stroud’s postseason résumé includes a rough outing in New England, where he threw four interceptions in a 28‑16 loss.

What the pause means for fans

For Texans supporters, the decision signals that the franchise is prioritizing stability on the field over contract chatter during the first half of the season. By waiting until after the season to revisit the extension, the organization hopes to keep the locker room focused on winning games and advancing deeper into the playoffs.

Should the negotiations extend into the offseason, fans can expect the Texans to present a clear proposal that reflects Stroud’s value to the team and the market. Until then, the quarterback will continue to lead the offense under his current deal, with the team’s leadership confident in his ability to compete at a high level.

Looking ahead

The Texans’ approach mirrors a growing trend among NFL clubs to avoid in‑season contract disputes that could disrupt team chemistry. By setting a firm deadline—Sept. 13—the organization gives both parties a clear timeline while preserving the focus on on‑field performance.

Texans fans will be watching closely as the season unfolds, hoping that Stroud’s play continues to elevate the team and that a mutually agreeable extension can be reached once the season concludes.
