Mustang High School Band Volunteers at Oklahoma City Food Bank

Oklahoma City – On Tuesday night, a handful of Mustang High School band students and their parents gathered at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s volunteer center to lend a hand in the fight against hunger. The effort was part of the food bank’s 2026 “Students Against Hunger” initiative, which runs through November 30 and invites schools across the state to compete for awards recognizing their service.

Band members step up for the community

Kristin Ritchter, former president of the Mustang Band Club, explained that participation was limited to a small, highly selective group from the 300‑member band. “It’s a very selective process,” she said. “Most of our students tonight are actually in at least one honor society, so they’re earning volunteer hours for their societies while serving the community.”

The band’s drumline greeted volunteers with a lively performance as participants arrived, creating a festive atmosphere that underscored the spirit of service. Parents accompanied their children, reinforcing the family‑centered approach that the school encourages for civic engagement.

Why the initiative matters

Hunger remains a pressing issue in Oklahoma, and the Regional Food Bank estimates that hundreds of families rely on its services each week. By involving students directly, the “Students Against Hunger” program aims to foster a generation that understands the importance of giving back. Ritchter noted, “There are some students who are hungry. If they come here and serve, they can make a difference in their peer’s life.”

Participating schools will be eligible for recognition awards, motivating more students to join future service days. The initiative also aligns with the band’s broader mission to develop well‑rounded individuals who excel academically, musically, and socially.

Looking ahead

The Mustang band plans to expand its volunteer efforts in the coming months, seeking additional opportunities for students to serve alongside their families. As the “Students Against Hunger” campaign continues, the school hopes to inspire other extracurricular groups to adopt similar service models, strengthening the fabric of the Oklahoma City community.
