Teen critically injured in Capitol Heights shooting, police say

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. – A teenage boy was seriously wounded Tuesday night after a gunfire incident on Larchmont Avenue, officials said. Police responded to calls of a shooting at approximately 8:40 p.m. in the 900 block of the residential street.

Police response and investigation

Prince George’s County police arrived on scene shortly after the first 911 call and found the victim receiving emergency aid from by‑standers. The teen was then transported to a nearby hospital where doctors listed his condition as critical but stable. As of the latest update, authorities have not released a suspect description, nor have they disclosed a motive for the shooting.

Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood, reviewing surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses, and speaking with witnesses. The investigation remains active, and police have asked anyone with information to contact the Prince George’s County Police Department’s tip line.

Community reaction

Residents of Capitol Heights expressed shock and concern over the incident, noting that the area has seen a rise in violent crime over the past year. Local community leaders, including the Capitol Heights Town Council, urged calm while emphasizing the need for increased public‑safety resources.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young man who was injured,” said Councilmember Maria Alvarez. “We will work with law‑enforcement to ensure our streets are safe for families and children.”

Public‑safety context

Prince George’s County has been working with state officials to address gun violence through a combination of increased patrols, community outreach programs, and partnerships with local schools. The department’s latest quarterly report indicated a modest decline in overall violent crimes, but shootings involving minors remain a troubling statistic.

The county’s Office of Community Policing highlighted recent initiatives such as youth mentorship programs and neighborhood watch groups, aiming to deter future incidents and provide support for at‑risk youth.

What residents can do

Police encourage anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has information about the suspect to call 911 or submit an anonymous tip via the county’s online portal. Residents are also reminded to lock doors, secure firearms, and report any suspicious activity to authorities.

Authorities will continue to update the public as the investigation progresses. The teen’s condition will be monitored, and the community hopes for a swift recovery.
