TEA Withdraws Conservator Plan for NEISD’s Cellphone Policy

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has decided against appointing a conservator to oversee the North East Independent School District’s (NEISD) cellphone policy. This decision follows the district’s revision of its policy to implement a bell-to-bell cellphone ban for the 2026-27 school year.

NEISD’s interim Superintendent Anthony Jarrett communicated the TEA’s decision in a letter addressed to district families. Initially, the TEA had recommended the appointment of a conservator in April, citing concerns that the district’s cellphone policy did not align with state law and guidance.

During a special meeting in April, the NEISD Board of Trustees voted to revise the policy, opting for a comprehensive ban on cellphone use during school hours. The TEA’s website outlines that a conservator would have provided support to NEISD staff, recommended improvements, and reported updates to the TEA.

However, the TEA has now withdrawn its recommendation, with Jarrett stating that the agency considers the matter resolved. The district plans to continue engaging with families to communicate expectations and next steps as it prepares for the policy’s implementation.

Community Engagement and Next Steps

With the new policy set to take effect in the upcoming school year, NEISD is focusing on ensuring a smooth transition. The district emphasizes the importance of clear communication with families to set expectations and address any concerns regarding the cellphone ban.

This development highlights the district’s commitment to aligning with state guidelines while addressing the needs of students and families. As NEISD moves forward, it remains dedicated to fostering an environment conducive to learning, free from the distractions of cellphone use during school hours.
