Sugar Land and Missouri City are experiencing significant growth in health care development, with several new facilities and expansions underway. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is building a 470,000-square-foot facility in Sugar Land, which will be the company’s largest Houston-area location outside of the Texas Medical Center.
New Facilities and Expansions
In addition to the MD Anderson facility, a new 34,000-square-foot Kelsey-Seybold Clinic is being built in Missouri City, which will provide primary care, OB/GYN services, on-site imaging, and lab services. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital are also undergoing renovations to better meet the needs of the area’s patients.
The new developments and expansions come as the areas mature and the population begins to age. In Sugar Land, the population over 65 has grown 119.31% since 2014, while Missouri City’s 65-plus community has grown 79.18% during the same period.
Community Impact
City officials in both Sugar Land and Missouri City are excited about the continued health care investments in the area, which will provide more accessible services to residents. The new facilities will also create jobs and help diversify the city’s tax base and economic profile.
According to Alba Penate-Johnson, economic development assistant director for the city of Sugar Land, the city’s goal is to build a health care ecosystem that supports residents, attracts talent and investment, and reinforces Sugar Land’s reputation as a premier business and health care destination.
