Harris County Flood Control Director Resigns

The Harris County Flood Control District director has resigned amid new project plans and deadlines. The district is working to complete 11 disaster recovery projects within the original deadlines set by the General Land Office (GLO). The projects are part of a larger effort to mitigate flooding in the area, which was severely affected by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

Project Plans and Deadlines

The district has presented a new framework for completing the projects, which includes investing in more workers to aid in quicker completion. The projects being moved to completion and funding under the flood mitigation deadline include the Isom Stormwater Detention Basin, Dinner Creek Stormwater Detention Basin, and Genoa Red Bluff Regional Stormwater Detention Basin.

Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey expressed concerns regarding the effectiveness of the flood control district to complete projects tied to federal funding. However, Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia expressed satisfaction with the work put in by the district despite numerous changes and approaching deadlines.

Next Steps

The commissioners will consider next steps for the position at the June 25 meeting, while the Office of County Administration manages the department in the interim. The district is required to spend all Community Development Block Grants for Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funding by February 2027 and CDBG-MIT funding by March 2028.
