Study finds dogs often increase risk in bear country, spray remains best defense

Recreationists who bring their canine companions into bear country should reconsider their safety assumptions. A new study published in the Journal of Wildlife Management examined 326 bear‑dog encounters from Alaska to Florida and found that dogs frequently increase, rather than decrease, the likelihood of a dangerous encounter.

Key findings from the research

Lead author Tom Smith, a wildlife biologist at Brigham Young University, compiled data from newspaper reports, government records, books and online sources spanning more than a century. The analysis revealed several striking patterns:

  • Dogs served as an early warning system in only 1 of 11 incidents.
  • In over half of the cases, the dog provoked the bear, initiating the conflict.
  • Unleashed dogs were involved in six times as many incidents as leashed pets.
  • Owners who attempted to rescue a dog during a scuffle were injured 85% of the time.
  • Overall, five people and 56 dogs died in the documented encounters.

Smith noted that the presence of a dog roughly doubled the odds of a conflict compared with groups of the same size without a canine companion. The data also confirmed long‑standing expert advice that larger human groups reduce the chance of an encounter.

Deterrents and preparedness

Only about 10% of the people involved carried bear spray, and roughly one‑third had a firearm. Smith emphasized that bear spray had the highest success rate in deterring aggressive bears, while firearms can be effective for experienced users. He warned that bear bells and similar noise devices are largely ineffective.

Practical steps for anyone venturing into bear habitat include traveling in groups, minimizing food odors, making regular noise, and always having a readily accessible deterrent such as bear spray. If a dog is brought along, it should be kept on a leash at all times.

Why dogs and bears clash

The study suggests an evolutionary component: wolves, the ancestors of modern dogs, have competed with bears for food for thousands of years. This historic rivalry may still trigger instinctual aggression when a dog encounters a bear.

Smith clarified that his findings apply to typical companion dogs, not specially trained guardian or livestock‑protecting breeds, which have shown some success in reducing bear presence on farms.

Implications for families and outdoor enthusiasts

For families who enjoy hiking, camping or trail running with their pets, the research underscores the need for realistic risk assessment. While many outings occur without incident, the data remind us that a beloved pet can unintentionally increase danger.

“The takeaway isn’t to keep dogs out of bear country,” Smith said, “but to understand the risks and take steps that greatly improve your odds of staying safe.”

As more people seek outdoor recreation, especially in the western United States, applying these evidence‑based recommendations can help protect both humans and their four‑legged family members.
