Cincinnati Public Schools start year amid $58 million budget gap and upcoming levy vote

On Wednesday, thousands of students returned to classrooms across Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS), marking the first day of the 2026‑27 academic year. The district’s reopening comes at a critical financial juncture, as CPS works to close a $58 million budget gap that forced the elimination of 100 positions last year.

Fiscal stewardship and community support

Superintendent Shauna Murphy told WLWT that the district has had to make “a lot of changes due to our budget, but we’re being fiscally responsible.” She emphasized that CPS is acting as a good steward of taxpayer dollars, noting the community’s visible enthusiasm on the first day of school. Murphy said the district’s strategic plan focuses on stronger classroom instruction, wrap‑around support for students, workforce readiness, and accountability in spending.

Property‑tax levy on the ballot

In November, CPS will ask voters to approve a new property‑tax levy. The measure represents a shift from the district’s traditional earned‑income tax levy to a property‑based funding model. Officials warn that without the levy, the district could be forced to cut essential services, including transportation routes, athletic programs, and extracurricular student programming, and may have to increase class sizes.

Local parents and community members are being reminded that the Metro bus system offers a free ride for parents who accompany their children on the first few days, helping families become comfortable with new routes.

Implications for families

The potential cuts underscore the importance of the upcoming vote for families who rely on school‑run transportation and extracurricular activities. Larger class sizes could affect the quality of instruction, a concern for many parents who value individualized attention for their children.

School board members and district leaders have been meeting with parent groups to explain the levy’s purpose and to answer questions about how the additional revenue would be allocated. The conversation reflects a broader dialogue about how public schools balance fiscal constraints with the mission to provide a robust education for every student.

Looking ahead

As the new school year gets underway, CPS will continue to monitor its finances closely, implementing cost‑saving measures while seeking community support for the levy. The district’s ability to maintain transportation, athletics, and programming will hinge on voter approval in November, making the levy a pivotal issue for the city’s families and taxpayers.
