Stoughton Warns of Pond Danger

Stoughton, Massachusetts officials issued a warning to residents after a dog died following a swim in Ames Pond. The Stoughton Board of Health said they were saddened to hear the news and are looking into the matter.

Investigation Underway

The Board of Health and environmental health agents are investigating the incident. Ames Pond beach is tested weekly, and no E. Coli exceedances have been found this season. However, algae blooms can occur rapidly and may cause illness in humans and pets.

Residents are advised to refrain from having pets enter Ames Pond at this time. Last month, a dog died after swimming at Millenium Park in Boston’s West Roxbury neighborhood, highlighting concerns about cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says gastrointestinal issues, including vomiting or foaming at the mouth, are the most frequently reported symptoms in dogs. Other symptoms can include excess drooling, diarrhea, jaundice, blood in urine, dark urine, malaise, lethargy, stumbling, loss of appetite, abdominal tenderness, and liver injury.
