Lamont Supports Repairs at Vandalized Nathan Hale Homestead

Gov. Ned Lamont announced that he is directing state agencies to help with repairs to the Nathan Hale Homestead after the site was vandalized over the weekend. The homestead, a beloved community gathering spot and historic asset, was broken into, burglarized, and vandalized, with damage extending to the Hale family barns and the barn used by the Coventry Farmers’ Market.

Incident Details

According to officials, suspects were seen on security footage disabling cameras on Sunday night between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The next day, Connecticut Landmarks staff found that the homestead had been broken into, with cash and items stolen from the property, and some materials stripped from appliances and infrastructure.

Robert Brock, Connecticut Landmarks’ Executive Director, expressed disappointment at the acts, especially given the significant restoration project underway to return the home to pristine condition as it celebrates its 250th anniversary this year.

Lamont emphasized the importance of preserving the homestead, one of the state’s most prized historic sites, for its role in telling American history. He is directing state agencies to provide aid to Connecticut Landmarks for the repairs, especially as the site prepares for its anniversary celebrations this fall.

Connecticut Landmarks is also raising money to help with the repairs. Anyone with information about the vandalism is urged to contact the Coventry Police Department’s anonymous tips line at 860-742-2400.
