Spurs Victory Turns Chaotic: Truck Rolls Over Amid Street Celebrations

San Antonio Spurs fans poured into Southwest Military Drive early Wednesday after a playoff win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, and celebration on the South Side turned chaotic when a pickup overturned at the intersection of SW Military Drive and Pleasanton Road, according to the San Antonio Police Department and witnesses including Timothy Alvarez.

Video from the scene shows a crowded stretch of roadway filled with honking cars and people celebrating, and the truck lying on its side amid the commotion. The crash occurred around 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, and authorities quickly arrived to control traffic and assess the situation.

SAPD’s preliminary report says officers were actively directing traffic when the collision happened, trying to manage a large volume of vehicles leaving the postgame celebrations. The report states the truck driver did not see an officer signaling them to stop and collided with another vehicle traveling southbound.

Timothy Alvarez, who watched the incident unfold, said everyone climbed out of the truck and that they appeared to be okay, offering a firsthand glimpse into the immediate aftermath. He captured the stunned reaction of bystanders and the quick attention officers gave to separating wreckage from the flow of cars.

“I could imagine what probably happened was, you know, this reckless driving, people acting reckless, you know, getting caught up in the moment, and then you got to take a turn,” Alvarez said, describing how celebration and traffic management collided. His words underline how a festive night can quickly become dangerous when drivers and crowds mix on busy streets.

SAPD confirmed both vehicles suffered major damage and were towed from the scene, clearing the intersection as officers continued to manage traffic and collect statements. That towing removed the immediate hazard, but the incident left a reminder of how easily celebrations can spill into reckless situations on city roadways.

Police also reported that one person was arrested for driving while intoxicated during the postgame celebrations on Tuesday night, though SAPD has not said whether that arrest is directly linked to the rollover crash. The arrest highlights a broader enforcement effort that night aimed at keeping roads and neighborhoods safe as fans left downtown and gathered across the city.

Officers on the scene emphasized precautions for fans who plan to celebrate in vehicles after future Spurs wins, urging motorists to remain inside their cars and obey traffic laws and local ordinances. SAPD spelled out several specific warnings meant to prevent similar incidents and keep both drivers and pedestrians out of harm’s way.

Authorities reminded celebrants not to exit vehicles on active roads, to avoid celebratory gunfire, and to refrain from popping fireworks or lighting fires in the street. They also warned against risky behavior like sitting on top of moving vehicles, a practice that endangers participants and other drivers and can quickly turn a win into a tragedy.

The scene on Southwest Military Drive serves as a caution for anyone joining citywide celebrations: enthusiasm and public safety must coexist. Officers remain visible at major gathering points after big games, and SAPD’s messages are clear—enjoy the Spurs’ success, but keep the streets and fellow fans safe.
