FORT WAYNE, Ind. — South Side High School is set to dedicate a brand‑new Veterans Plaza on Monday, Nov. 9, at 12:30 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the school’s south entrance on East Oakdale Drive, with a backup indoor location in the auditorium should weather intervene.
Project roots and community support
The plaza is the result of nearly a year of planning, fundraising, and community involvement. The idea originated with history teacher Jon Baker and his students, who envisioned a permanent space to recognize the long tradition of military service among South Side families. Veterans, alumni, and local partners contributed time and resources to bring the vision to life.
Features of the new plaza
Designed as a gathering place for current students, veterans, and families, the plaza includes six Buddy Benches, each positioned beneath an emblem representing one of the five branches of the military. Landscaping, decorative lighting, and a flagpole complete the site, creating a respectful and welcoming environment for reflection and camaraderie.
South Side’s military heritage
For more than a century, South Side High School has seen generations of its students and staff answer the call to serve. The school already maintains indoor memorials honoring those who have served, and the new Veterans Plaza adds an outdoor component that highlights the community’s ongoing commitment to military‑connected families.
Purple Star School recognition
South Side has been designated a Purple Star School for five consecutive years, a distinction that acknowledges its support for military‑connected students and families. The dedication of the plaza reinforces that commitment and provides a visible reminder of the sacrifices made by alumni and local service members.
Event details
The dedication ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. on the school grounds. Attendees can expect remarks from school officials, local veterans, and community leaders, followed by a ribbon‑cutting and a moment of silence. If inclement weather makes the outdoor space unusable, the program will be moved to the school auditorium.
Community impact
Beyond honoring past service, the plaza offers a place for current students to learn about the values of duty, honor, and sacrifice. It also serves as a gathering spot for veteran families during school events, fostering stronger ties between the school and the broader Fort Wayne community.
South Side High School invites all residents, veterans, and families to join the dedication and celebrate the enduring legacy of service that defines the school’s history.
