Purdue University appoints retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Jay B. Silveria as president

West Lafayette, IN – Purdue University’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Thursday to name retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Jay B. Silveria as the institution’s next president. Silveria will assume the role on Feb. 1, 2027, taking over from interim president Mitch Daniels.

Silveria’s background and experience

Silveria brings a blend of military leadership and higher‑education administration to Purdue. He has served as the head of the University of Arkansas System since 2025, overseeing multiple campuses and a statewide research network. Prior to that, he was superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he managed a large academic and training enterprise. He also held the position of executive director at Texas A&M University and the Bush School of Government and Public Service in Washington, D.C., gaining experience in both academic governance and public‑policy education.

Vision for Purdue

In his introductory remarks, Silveria praised Purdue’s reputation for affordability, accessibility, ingenuity, and integrity. “While I am familiar with Purdue’s worldwide reputation for affordability and accessibility, ingenuity and integrity, I look forward to meeting the people who make this place so special and to listen and learn about its culture,” he said. He emphasized a commitment to building on the university’s strengths while engaging faculty, staff, students, and the broader Indiana community.

What the appointment means for the campus

The selection of a former senior military officer signals Purdue’s continued focus on disciplined leadership and strategic growth. Silveria’s experience managing large, complex organizations is expected to support Purdue’s ambitious research agenda, its expanding engineering and technology programs, and its outreach to Indiana’s workforce needs. Stakeholders anticipate that his tenure will reinforce the university’s role as a driver of economic development in the state.

Community response

Local leaders and alumni have expressed optimism about the new president’s arrival. Indiana Governor Mike Donnelly praised the board’s decision, noting that Silveria’s background aligns with Purdue’s mission to serve the state’s families and industries. Several Purdue faculty members highlighted the importance of a president who values both academic excellence and practical, mission‑oriented leadership.

Next steps

Silveria will spend the coming weeks meeting with campus leaders, student groups, and community partners to outline his priorities for the upcoming academic year. The board will continue to support the transition, ensuring that Purdue maintains its trajectory of growth and innovation while honoring its long‑standing commitment to affordable, high‑quality education.
