South County Voters Weigh In on Local and State Elections

In South County, voters participated in local city council races, a significant mayoral contest, and a crowded statewide race for governor. At the Otay Mesa/Nestor Branch Library in San Diego’s Council District 8, Patricia Osuna, a house cleaner, emphasized national issues over local ones, citing respect for the Constitution and economic concerns as her main influences. She mentioned former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and billionaire Tom Steyer as her top choices for governor, though she did not disclose her final vote.

Local Concerns and Decisions

Virginia Zermeno, a law clerk from Otay Mesa, deliberated over Measure A, a San Diego ballot measure proposing a tax on unoccupied second homes. Influenced by social media posts from former Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey, Zermeno ultimately voted against the measure, viewing it as potential government overreach. She supported Venus Molina for District 8 on the Council, appreciating Molina’s local roots and her status as a single mother.

At Chula Vista City Hall, Ian Trotter, a portrait photography studio owner, voted for Republican Steve Hilton for governor and John McCann for Chula Vista mayor. Trotter expressed frustration with current business regulations and the City Council’s focus on social issues, preferring attention on homelessness and core city needs.

Voter Guides and Endorsements

Jose Castillo, a retired Catholic priest, supported Francisco Tamayo for mayor, motivated by housing and cost of living issues. Castillo relied on a voter guide from Local 89 of the Laborers International Union, which endorsed Tamayo and other local Democrats. Claudia Ramos, a real estate agent, also emphasized housing and immigration, choosing Becerra for governor due to his experience and endorsements from like-minded individuals.
