Socorro County commissioners have unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on data centers, following months of opposition to the proposed Green Data Center project. The decision came after numerous town hall meetings where residents voiced concerns about the impact of the data center on local resources, particularly water usage.
Background
New Mexico Tech recently announced it would not pursue construction of the project. Jason Bak with Green Data Centers said the company has looked at other projects in the state and out of the state that have contributed money to high schools and the community to improve the standard of living.
Green Data CEO told commissioners the company supports the process and wants to stay involved. The moratorium will give the county time to assess the potential impact of data centers on the local community and resources.
