A mysterious act of vandalism has occurred on the National Mall in Washington D.C., with the numbers ‘8647’ etched into the grass. The numbers, which have been used to signal opposition to President Donald Trump, were visible in aerial images taken on Thursday.

Investigation Underway

The Secret Service has deferred comment to the US Park Police, who are handling the investigation into the markings. A spokesperson for the Department of Interior described the markings as ‘deranged vandalism’ that ‘will not be tolerated’. The Department of Interior also stated that any threat against the President is taken very seriously and that those responsible will be held accountable.

The numbers ‘8647’ have been used by some to express opposition to President Trump, with ’86’ being a code in the restaurant industry meaning to get rid of or remove an order or patron, and ’47’ referring to Trump being the 47th president. However, the Trump administration has interpreted the use of these numbers as a threat against the President.

In a related incident, former FBI Director James Comey was indicted in April for posting an image on Instagram showing the numbers ‘8647’ spelled out in sea shells, which was seen as a threat against the President.
