World Cup Visitors Experience America

As the World Cup approaches, international soccer fans are pouring into North America, sharing their experiences and observations about life in the U.S. on social media. Swedish tourist Elsa Thora, who has tickets to see both Sweden and England play, has documented her adventures, from trying ranch dressing for the first time to exploring a Trader Joe’s grocery store.

A Lighthearted Perspective

Thora’s posts, along with those of other tourists, have offered a more lighthearted counterpoint to the political discourse that has shaped perceptions of the U.S. in recent months. Her observations have been met with amusement and pride from many Americans on social media.

Thora said she intentionally chooses not to speak on U.S. politics in her social media posts, noting that political tensions haven’t impacted her travel. She’s ‘just here for a good time,’ she said, adding that it’s been fun seeing the positive reactions to her posts.

Other tourists, such as a German fan who goes by Freddy on social media, have also gone viral sharing their U.S. experiences. Freddy has posted about his visits to Buc-ee’s, the sheer size of American stadiums, and his first meal at Waffle House.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy gave Freddy a shoutout on social media, writing, ‘There’s no better way to see our country than on a road trip! Because to love America, you have to see America.’

A National Perspective

The U.S. is hosting this year’s World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada, with 78 of the tournament’s 104 matches taking place across 11 cities. While some fans and participants have faced hurdles due to travel restrictions, many are excited to experience the best of America.
