Police in a southern Maine town issued a warning after two confirmed shark sightings in waters off a local beach. The sightings were in the area of the southern tip of Prouts Neck and near the mouth of the Scarborough River.

The sharks appeared to be two juvenile great white sharks, between 6-8 feet in length, police said. The information about the sightings was relayed to police by a shark expert with the New England Aquarium, who reviewed footage submitted by a local fisherman.
Scarborough police are now encouraging beachgoers, swimmers, surfers, paddlers and boaters to remain vigilant in local waters. While shark encounters remain rare in Maine, the public is encouraged to use caution, avoid swimming near schools of bait fish or seals, and report any additional sightings to local authorities.
