The town of Sellersburg and the Jeffersonville Animal Shelter are teaming up to help more dogs find forever homes while launching what organizers hope will become a new annual community tradition.
Dog Days of Summer Event Details
The first-ever ‘Dog Days of Summer’ will take place from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Wilkerson Park at 105 N. New Albany St., Sellersburg, Indiana. The free family-friendly event will feature adoptable dogs from the Jeffersonville Animal Shelter, food trucks, vendors and local businesses.
One of the dogs hoping to find a home is Fly By, an adoptable shelter dog. The shelter director, Kristie Ashcraft, said the shelter has seen a growing number of larger dogs since the pandemic, and those animals often remain at the shelter much longer than smaller dogs and cats.
Organizers hope the event will give those dogs more exposure while introducing the community to the shelter’s adoption, fostering and volunteer programs. Adoption fees will be waived during the event, and the Jeffersonville Animal Shelter will also be accepting monetary and pet supply donations, including dog toys, treats and other needed items.
More than 20 local vendors will offer food, goods and activities that attendees can enjoy alongside meeting adoptable pets. Families are also encouraged to bring their own dogs to participate in meet-and-greets with adoptable pets.
