Seattle mayor defends camera expansion amid awkward interview with police chief

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, a self‑identified socialist and Democrat, was pressed by KOMO News reporter Chris Daniels about the city’s plan to reduce gun violence using new surveillance cameras. During the interview, Assistant Police Chief Nicole Powell hesitated before answering, prompting Wilson to interject and claim the cameras have been “useful tools” in solving crimes.

Mayor’s response on camera policy

When asked about the metric of success for the camera program, Wilson answered that the ultimate goal is “zero homicides, fewer homicides, and fewer guns shot.” She added that the city is conducting a privacy and data‑governance audit, with results expected by the end of the month, after which a decision on further expansion will be made public.

Chief of Seattle’s Community Assisted Response and Engagement (CARE) Department, Amy Barden, shifted the conversation to broader public‑safety metrics, emphasizing referrals to services and meaningful improvement in residents’ lives. Assistant Chief Powell later affirmed that a holistic approach, similar to strategies proven in other cities, is being taken.

Background on Seattle’s camera debate

During her campaign, Wilson opposed expanding the city’s surveillance‑camera system, warning that “turning on more cameras won’t magically make our neighborhoods safer” and could increase vulnerability. Since taking office, she paused further expansion pending the audit, while allowing existing cameras to remain operational.

The interview sparked criticism from conservative observers and local advocacy groups, who questioned Wilson’s familiarity with the city’s public‑safety tools. Nonetheless, the mayor’s office maintains that the audit will guide any future decisions, aiming to balance safety with privacy concerns.
