Protecting Children from Common Online Scams: A Guide for Parents

Every parent knows the old warning: “If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” In today’s digital world that advice is more vital than ever. While children and teens spend countless hours gaming, streaming, and chatting online, scammers have found new ways to exploit their trust. According to recent Verizon research, 63% of Americans have faced a cyber threat in the past year, and 80% of parents worry about their children being manipulated by online scams.

Why a Simple Pause Can Save the Day

Scammers rely on urgency, urging kids to act before they think. Teaching children to stop, breathe, and ask three quick questions before clicking a link, sending money, or sharing personal information can break the scam’s momentum. The three questions are:

  • Who is really sending this message?
  • Does this request make sense, or does it feel rushed?
  • What could happen if I comply?

When a child answers honestly, they often discover the request is suspicious.

Five Scams Parents Should Know

1. Gaming Scams

Online games are a hotbed for fraud. Scammers promise free in‑game currency, exclusive skins, or rare items. A typical trap involves offering to buy items after the child first sends the items or login details. Once the trade is complete, the fraudster disappears, or they change the account password and lock the rightful owner out.

2. Phishing and Smishing

Phishing arrives via email, while smishing uses text messages. Both mimic trusted sources—games, schools, or streaming services—to coax children into clicking malicious links or revealing passwords. Rather than memorizing every possible scam, teach kids to spot common signs: unexpected requests for personal data, poor grammar, or urgent language.

3. AI‑Generated Impersonation

Advances in artificial intelligence now allow scammers to create convincing voice messages, photos, and videos that appear to come from friends or popular influencers. A teen might receive a voice note that sounds like a buddy asking for money. Because the message feels personal, the child may act quickly. Emphasize the importance of verifying any unusual request through a separate, trusted channel.

4. Money Mule Schemes

These scams disguise themselves as easy‑money jobs or referral opportunities shared on social media. Teens think they are helping with a simple online gig, but they are actually moving stolen money for criminals. The Federal Trade Commission provides a step‑by‑step guide for victims, and parents should discuss the red flags of any “quick‑cash” offer.

5. Sextortion

Scammers may pose as a peer, building trust over weeks before demanding an intimate photo. Once obtained, they threaten to expose the image unless paid. Fear and embarrassment often keep children silent, which is exactly what the extortionist wants. Creating a safe, non‑judgmental environment at home encourages children to report such attempts immediately.

Additional Threats to Watch

Beyond the five highlighted scams, families should be aware of account‑takeover attempts, fake CAPTCHA traps, credential‑stuffing attacks, crypto investment fraud (often called “pig‑butchering”), and deep‑fake media. Each of these can compromise personal data or lead to financial loss.

Practical Tools for Parents

Technology can help, but it does not replace conversation. Enable two‑factor authentication on all accounts, use unique passwords for each service, and consider identity‑monitoring services that alert families to compromised information. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children offers resources on sextortion, while the FTC’s guide walks families through money‑mule warnings.

By teaching children to think critically rather than merely memorizing rules, parents empower the next generation to navigate the internet safely and responsibly.
