Seabreeze Beach Access Repairs Begin After Permit Issued in Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach officials issued a building permit on Monday that allows contractors to start repairs at the Seabreeze beach approach, one of the city’s busiest access points to the shoreline. The permit remains active through February, giving crews the authority to address structural deficiencies identified during a recent special magistrate hearing.

Scope of the Work

The repair plan calls for the removal of deteriorated concrete slabs, beams and columns that support the tunnel and the building above it. In sections where the structure is especially weakened, temporary supports or bracing will be installed to keep the area stable while permanent repairs are completed. The city estimates the project will take between 60 and 90 days and cost roughly $65,000.

Impact on Drivers and Local Businesses

Seabreeze’s sand is known for its firmness, allowing a wide range of vehicles to drive onto the beach year‑round without the need for 4×4 signage. Business owner Tom Caffrey noted that the closure forces drivers to travel about a mile to alternative entry points, such as the International Speedway access or the Ormond Beach approach.

“For now, they’ll have to go to International Speedway or almost Ormond to get on the beach,” Caffrey said. “I saw five cars turn around in 20 minutes.” The reduced traffic has raised concerns among nearby merchants who rely on beach‑goers for patronage.

Local Restaurants Adjust

King’s Pizza, located directly across from the Seabreeze approach, is adapting by emphasizing delivery to beach visitors. An employee explained that many customers walk over from the sand, pick up a brochure, and often order dinner after a day at the shore. With the access point closed, the restaurant plans to lean more heavily on deliveries, encouraging patrons to call and have meals brought directly to the beach.

Community Response

Beach driving has long been a hallmark of Daytona Beach’s appeal, drawing tourists and supporting a network of coastal businesses. Residents and business owners alike hope the repairs will be completed swiftly so the area can resume its role as a vital conduit for both locals and visitors.

The city will provide updates on the project’s progress and any temporary signage or detours that may affect beach access. In the meantime, drivers are urged to use the alternate routes and businesses are encouraged to stay connected with customers through phone orders and delivery services.
