Altamonte Springs Library Faces Possible Funding Cut as Residents Rally

Altamonte Springs officials are preparing to vote on the city’s 2027 budget, and the future of the town’s 66‑year‑old public library hangs in the balance. City Manager Martz has told library staff that the proposed budget, which has not yet been released, is likely to exclude funding for the library.

Residents voice concern

Local families gathered at recent city meetings to express anger and worry. “This is just a great place for families with young children,” said resident Jessica Lynch. Lynch also questioned how the library’s $500,000 budget was being spent, asking, “With that tax revenue, the ultimate library budget for this last year was around $500,000. So, like, where did all those funds go?”

Another longtime patron, Nicole Donelson, highlighted the library’s role for multigenerational families. “It is also a place for my parents. They don’t have the same kind of reliable transportation, and so they come here a lot,” she explained.

City officials explain the fiscal picture

Commissioner Bob O’Malley confirmed that the city had considered cutting the library because of budget concerns. “We had plans to cut the library because of budget concerns,” O’Malley said, adding that he intends to vote against any budget that does not fully fund the library.

According to minutes from a special meeting held on July 18, 2024, Martz told residents that the proposed cut seemed to come “out of the blue” but reassured them that the city had spent several months evaluating revenue projections that appeared unlikely to cover the budget. The same minutes noted that many residents felt the potential cut was unexpected.

Past efforts to protect funding

Two years ago, the library faced a similar threat, prompting a strong community outcry. At that time, residents supported a 0.9‑mill property‑tax increase, which would have generated roughly $4.3 million to $4.4 million annually. The additional revenue was projected to restore most items removed from the budget, including the library.

While that tax measure helped preserve funding then, the current discussion centers on whether the city will rely on the same tax increase or find alternative sources. Residents remain skeptical, demanding transparency on how any new revenue would be allocated.

Next steps

The city commissioners are scheduled to vote on the 2027 budget at a meeting on September 3. Community members plan to attend and voice their support for keeping the library fully funded, emphasizing its importance as an educational hub, a safe space for children, and a resource for seniors without reliable transportation.

As the deadline approaches, the outcome will determine whether the library continues to serve as a cornerstone of Altamonte Springs’ community life or becomes another line item subject to fiscal cuts.
