Savannah Church Receives Grant

First African Baptist Church of Savannah, GA, has been awarded a $500,000 grant by the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund to restore its iconic stained-glass windows. The church, which is one of the oldest historically Black churches in the United States, will use the funding to repair and restore the windows that date back to the early 1900s.

Preserving Black Churches

The grant is part of the Preserving Black Churches program, which has supported more than 170 historically Black churches across the nation. The program aims to protect sacred places that anchor Black faith, culture, democracy, and community. First African Baptist Church was organized as a congregation in 1773 and officially constituted in 1777, making it a significant part of American history.

The African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, a division of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, has awarded $8.5 million in grants to 33 historically Black churches, including First African Baptist of Savannah, GA, through its fourth annual Preserving Black Churches program.
