Santa Barbara Launches $2.4 Million Teacher Residency Program

In an effort to address ongoing teacher shortages, the Santa Barbara Unified School District and Westmont College have partnered to launch a new teacher residency program. This initiative is supported by a $2.4 million grant from the state, aiming to bring more aspiring educators into local classrooms.

Hands-On Training for Aspiring Teachers

The program offers a unique approach by allowing participants to gain practical experience in classrooms throughout the academic year, rather than waiting until their coursework is completed. Aspiring teachers will work alongside experienced mentor teachers three days a week, providing them with real-world classroom experience.

Superintendent Hilda Maldonado emphasized the significance of this funding, stating it represents a major step forward for both students and future educators. The program is designed to better prepare candidates for the demands of teaching while fostering a strong connection to the community.

Support for Diverse Candidates

To support participants financially, the program includes a $33,000 stipend to help cover tuition and living expenses during their training. Recruitment efforts will focus on multilingual and first-generation college students, with the goal of increasing diversity and representation in the classroom.

The first cohort of residents is expected to begin this fall, with applications open until June 10th. This initiative not only aims to fill immediate staffing needs but also to build a more robust and diverse teaching workforce for the future.
