New Haven’s Orange Street Plaza Remains a Pedestrian Haven

The Orange Street pedestrian plaza in New Haven, known for its vibrant community atmosphere, will remain open to foot traffic this summer, continuing a tradition that began in 2020. Despite some business owners’ concerns, the plaza, located in the Ninth Square area, has been a popular spot for locals to enjoy outdoor dining and events.

Community and Business Reactions

While some business owners, like Andres Cordido of Somos Arepas, have criticized the plaza for attracting undesirable activities, others see it as a boon. Matt Loter of Elm City Games appreciates the community space, noting that issues like drug use and panhandling are broader city challenges, not limited to the plaza.

Mayor Justin Elicker has worked with local organizations to address business concerns, reducing the number of tables and shortening the plaza’s open season. The New Haven Police Department and Town Green Downtown Ambassadors have increased their presence to ensure a safe environment.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

The plaza, adorned with rainbow street markings and planters, hosts various events, including salsa nights and art markets, organized by Town Green. Beacon Communities, which owns the surrounding properties, supports the plaza by securing annual permits and engaging with tenants and community partners for feedback.

Despite adjustments, some business owners like Eddy Jabbour of Ninth Square Market remain skeptical, citing concerns about customer deterrence due to nearby activities. However, the city remains committed to balancing the needs of businesses and the community, with plans to reevaluate the plaza’s impact annually.
