Segundo Barrio Inspires New Play Area at El Paso Museum

The El Paso Museum of History has unveiled a newly renovated play area inspired by the historic Segundo Barrio neighborhood. Located on the museum’s first floor, the ‘Little Barrio Play Area’ offers children an interactive experience that reflects the unique cultural heritage of this vibrant community.

Honoring Local Heritage

Segundo Barrio, situated south of Downtown El Paso, has long been known as ‘the other Ellis Island’ due to its historical significance as a port of entry between El Paso and Mexico. The play area features miniature versions of the neighborhood’s iconic Chicago brick-style apartments, trolley areas, and ‘tienditas,’ allowing young visitors to explore and learn about their community’s past.

The renovation was made possible through support from the Nusenda Foundation’s 2026 Community Rewards program. Sara Keller, a spokesperson for Nusenda, emphasized the importance of the project in helping young learners build confidence, pride, and a deeper connection to their community.

A Community-Focused Initiative

This initiative highlights the value of preserving and celebrating local history, particularly for families and children. By engaging with the cultural elements of Segundo Barrio, the museum aims to foster a sense of belonging and identity among its youngest visitors.

The City of El Paso’s commitment to honoring its diverse heritage through projects like the ‘Little Barrio Play Area’ underscores the importance of community-focused initiatives that support traditional family values and educational opportunities.
