Rochester Fire Department Advises Call‑Ahead for Backyard Fires and Sets Size Limits

As Labor Day weekend arrives and cooler evenings beckon, many Rochester families look forward to gathering around a backyard fire pit. While the tradition is welcomed, the City of Rochester Fire Department reminds residents that a few simple steps keep the season safe and prevent unnecessary emergency calls.

Call fire dispatch before you light

The fire department’s public‑information sheet recommends that anyone planning a recreational fire call Fire Dispatch at (507) 328‑2830 first. Callers should provide their name, address, and telephone number. This quick notification helps the department track fire activity and reduces the chance of a false alarm.

Size and placement rules

Rochester’s ordinance limits a fire’s diameter to no more than 3 feet. The fire must also be at least 25 feet away from any occupiable structure. If the fire is contained within an approved barbecue pit or grill, the clearance requirement drops to 15 feet. Approved barbecue pits or fire rings may not exceed 36 inches in diameter (about 9 square feet) and must be built of non‑combustible materials with a minimum enclosure depth of 12 inches above the fuel.

What is prohibited

While backyard fire pits are legal, open‑air burning of yard waste—such as leaves, tree limbs, or other debris—is expressly prohibited. Residents should use municipal waste services for disposal rather than burning.

Safety checklist

  • Keep a fire‑safety‑knowledgeable adult on site until the fire is fully extinguished.
  • Never allow a fire to smolder after you think it’s out.
  • If using charcoal, place cooled ashes in a metal container away from the building.
  • Have fire‑extinguishing tools ready, such as a bucket, shovel, garden hose, or a fire extinguisher with a 4A rating.

Why the rules matter

Rochester’s fire safety guidelines reflect the city’s commitment to protecting families and property while preserving the cherished tradition of outdoor fire gatherings. By calling dispatch, residents help the fire department allocate resources efficiently, especially during peak fire‑season weekends.
