Rochester Residents Recall 2018‑2019 Polar Vortex as Summer Heat Arrives

Rochester, MN – While many Minnesotans are now sweating through shirts and longing for cooler evenings, longtime residents are grateful for the scorching September weather. The reminder comes from the memory of the 2018‑2019 winter, a season that tested the city’s resilience.

Winter of Record Cold

That winter brought a relentless polar vortex that settled over Southeast Minnesota in late January. According to the National Weather Service, Rochester experienced sub‑zero temperatures on 28 separate days. A prolonged cold snap forced schools to close, businesses to shut their doors, and even halted mail delivery.

Wind chills plunged to terrifying levels, ranging from –30°F to –60°F. On January 30, the high temperature was a frigid –19°F, followed the next morning by a low of –30°F—the coldest reading in more than two decades. At 4 a.m. that day, the wind chill reached an astonishing –61°F.

Snowfall and Community Impact

Adding to the hardship, the season deposited more than five feet of snow across the region. The deep drifts and icy roads required repeated snow‑removal efforts, with many residents shoveling their driveways multiple times a week. Despite the challenges, the community pulled together, demonstrating the strong family and neighborly bonds that define Rochester.

“We learned to rely on each other, check on elderly neighbors, and keep the spirit of the city alive,” said longtime resident Mary Jensen. “Those cold months reminded us how important it is to look out for one another.”

Why the Heat Feels Like a Gift

Today, as temperatures rise into the high 80s and low 90s, the contrast is stark. Residents who endured the bitter cold are now embracing every sunny, sweaty day, grateful for a break from the harsh winter that once dominated daily life.

“A 90‑degree afternoon feels like a miracle after that winter,” Jensen added. “We’re soaking up the sunshine while we can, knowing that another harsh winter could be just around the corner.”

Looking Ahead

Meteorologists predict a typical Minnesota fall, with the first frost expected later this month. While the community welcomes the current warmth, many are already preparing for the next winter’s challenges, reinforcing the city’s tradition of preparedness and mutual support.

For now, Rochester residents are enjoying the heat, remembering that the state’s reputation for severe winters makes any warm spell feel like a true blessing.
