Volunteer Trash Bash Planned Near La Pine State Park for National Public Lands Day

Central Oregon families and outdoor enthusiasts have a new opportunity to serve their community. Discover Your Northwest, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting public lands, is organizing a Care for the Land Fall Trash Bash near La Pine State Park on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2026. The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon and celebrates National Public Lands Day.

What to Expect

Volunteers will gather at a meeting point that will be confirmed shortly before the event. Participants will receive all necessary tools, supplies, and a complimentary lunch. The cleanup crew will focus on removing litter and debris from trails and picnic areas within the Deschutes National Forest, helping preserve the natural beauty that draws hikers, anglers, and families to the region.

Who Can Join

The cleanup welcomes anyone with a desire to protect the environment—no prior experience required. Minors age 12 and older may take part, provided they are accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entire duration. Organizers note that dogs are not permitted due to logistical and permitting constraints, though accommodations for disability‑related needs can be arranged upon request.

Why It Matters

Public lands are a cornerstone of Central Oregon’s heritage and economy. By removing trash, volunteers directly improve safety, wildlife habitat, and the overall visitor experience. The event also offers educational moments throughout the morning, where participants can learn about responsible stewardship, the role of the Care for the Land program, and ways to stay involved in future conservation projects.

About Discover Your Northwest

Founded in 1974, Discover Your Northwest is a Seattle‑based 501(c)(3) organization that operates across Oregon, Washington, northern California, Idaho, and Montana. Its mission is to support public lands through educational programs, retail operations, and community partnerships. Karen Walsh, director of programs, is coordinating the Trash Bash and emphasizes the importance of community‑driven action in preserving these treasured spaces.

How to Register

Interested volunteers should sign up online at discovernw.org/volunteer. Registration helps organizers plan for supplies, meals, and safety measures. The exact meeting location near La Pine State Park will be announced in advance of the event.

Looking Ahead

This is the second Trash Bash under the Care for the Land program, building on a growing tradition of local clean‑up events that strengthen community bonds while safeguarding the environment. Participants are encouraged to spread the word, invite neighbors, and consider joining future initiatives that keep Central Oregon’s public lands pristine for generations to come.
