Robert White Wins D.C. Delegate Seat; Janeese Lewis George Elected Mayor

Washington, D.C. — Voters handed the District a fresh slate of leaders on Nov. 3, delivering decisive victories to two longtime Democrats. Former councilmember Robert White secured the at‑large delegate seat with 87.29% of the first‑round ranked‑choice vote, and councilmember Janeese Lewis George was elected mayor with 84.34% of the vote.

White’s vision for the delegate role

White, who resigned from the council to comply with a 1970 law barring simultaneous service, told supporters that his top priorities will be advancing D.C. statehood and rebuilding the local economy. He urged every member of Congress to sign on to H.R. 51, the bill that would grant the District full representation. “When we get a Democratic president in two years, I believe we will pass it,” White said, referencing the upcoming 2028 election.

He also highlighted the loss of more than 60,000 government jobs and pledged to attract private‑sector employers, offering tax exemptions to businesses that relocate to the District. “We need to backfill these jobs so families can stay stable,” he explained.

Mayor‑elect Lewis George’s family‑first platform

Lewis George, a D.C. Public Schools alumna and former youth mayor, ran a “people first” campaign centered on affordable child care, utilities, high‑quality schools, safe neighborhoods, and cutting red tape for businesses. In her victory speech she honored her mother, a postal service employee, and her grandmother, a cafeteria worker, underscoring the District’s working‑class roots.

She promised job‑training programs and housing support to curb displacement, saying, “We will focus on getting people jobs so they can afford to stay in the city.” George also noted that she has been in contact with the White House and looks forward to meeting the president to discuss how the federal government can assist D.C. residents.

Council dynamics and party affiliation changes

During the same election cycle, Councilmember Christina Henderson announced a switch from independent to Democrat, prompting criticism from D.C. Democratic Party leaders who warned it could undermine the Home Rule Act. The party subsequently appointed Jamal Holtz, president of the D.C. Young Democrats, as an interim at‑large council member.

White expressed doubt that Henderson would pursue the at‑large seat, noting that such a move would cast the District in a poor light as it continues to fight for full representation on Capitol Hill.

Looking ahead

With the new delegate and mayor in place, the District’s leadership will focus on securing federal support for statehood, revitalizing the local job market, and preserving affordable housing for longtime residents. The incoming officials emphasized that their policies are rooted in the lived experiences of D.C. families and aim to strengthen the community for generations to come.
