Report warns AI tools in schools may embed DEI ideology despite university backtracking

Defending Education, a watchdog group focused on academic freedom, released a report this week warning that artificial‑intelligence (AI) tools being developed at several major universities continue to embed diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) principles. The group argues that, although many campuses have publicly down‑played DEI programs, they are now channeling the same ideology into AI systems that could be adopted by K‑12 schools.

Universities cited in the report

The report names institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University, Virginia State University and Morgan State University. MIT’s “Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education” initiative describes its goal as creating a more inclusive future for education in the AI era. UC Berkeley’s AI Research Lab (BAIR) states its mission is to advance “responsible and equitable AI.” Columbia’s Social Intervention Group (SIG) highlights a project aimed at evaluating AI chatbot equity for LGBTQ+ communities. Virginia State’s Center for Responsible AI and Morgan State’s Center for Equitable Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Systems both emphasize equitable deployment of AI in education and public life.

Defending Education’s concerns

According to investigative reporter Casey Ryan, the universities’ shift to AI represents a “thinly veiled attempt to protect their own funding from the federal government” while still advancing DEI goals. Ryan warned that if AI tools embedded with DEI become standard in classrooms, “far‑left ideologies such as gender ideology and anti‑racism become the new norm for students.” He added that teachers may soon rely on AI for lesson planning, grading and student research, making it harder to reverse the influence.

Potential impact on K‑12 education

The report cautions that as AI tools become commonplace in schools, students will be trained to use technology that reflects identity‑based frameworks. This could shape curricula, assessment methods and classroom discussions in ways that align with DEI perspectives rather than parental or community values.

Responses

None of the universities contacted for comment have responded to The Center Square’s request for comment.

Broader context

The findings arrive amid a national debate over the role of DEI in public institutions and the extent to which federal funding influences university policies. Critics argue that embedding DEI in AI could limit parental input and constrain educational choices, while supporters claim it promotes fairness and inclusion.
