Idaho K‑3 reading scores dip slightly as top schools are highlighted

Idaho’s youngest learners saw a modest decline in reading proficiency this spring, dropping half a percentage point from 70.9% last year to 70.4% on the newly redesigned Idaho Reading Indicator exam. The test, administered on computers for the second time this school year, measures how well K‑3 students can read independently.

Top‑performing schools

Even as the overall rate slipped, several schools outpaced the state average. EdNews compiled a list of the top ten performers among both traditional public schools and charter schools. Consistent with previous years, charter schools dominated the overall top‑ten list, and all of the leading schools had fewer than 350 test‑takers, underscoring the advantage smaller schools often have in delivering focused instruction.

West Ada School District, Idaho’s largest district, produced the most entries in the traditional‑school category, with five of its schools ranking among the top ten. Other large districts with schools on the list included Boise, Coeur d’Alene, and Lake Pend Oreille, indicating that strong performance is not limited to small, rural districts.

Virtual schools lag behind

Online programs continued to face challenges. Only one virtual school, Gem Prep: Online, surpassed the statewide proficiency rate. Boundary County Online managed to place on the virtual‑school top‑ten list, but its proficiency score was just 43.3%, well below the state average.

Factors influencing results

EdNews cautioned that direct comparisons between schools can be misleading. Variables such as school size, student demographics, and local funding levels all affect proficiency outcomes. Additionally, some data sets were redacted by the state, limiting a full analysis of every district’s performance.

Parents and educators who monitor school performance can use these rankings as one of several tools when evaluating educational options for their children. While the overall dip may raise concerns, the presence of high‑performing schools across both traditional and charter sectors offers examples of effective teaching practices that other districts might emulate.

Looking ahead

The Idaho Department of Education plans to continue refining the Reading Indicator to better reflect student growth and to provide clearer guidance for teachers and families. Stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed about upcoming changes and to support schools that demonstrate strong instructional outcomes.
