Rep Byron Donalds outlines Florida health plan and vaccine stance on Face the Nation

Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds, the party’s nominee for governor, appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday to discuss his health‑care platform. While the interview was broadcast nationally, the policy proposals are aimed squarely at Floridians.

Parental choice on childhood vaccines

When host Margaret Brennan asked whether Donalds would move to repeal state‑mandated immunizations such as polio and MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), he said any change would require a thorough study and collaboration with the Florida Legislature. Donalds emphasized the need to “engage” lawmakers before altering vaccine requirements.

He voiced support for steps taken by Governor Ron DeSantis and Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo that expand parental choice, noting that spreading out a child’s vaccine schedule “makes sense” to allow an infant’s body to absorb the inoculations.

Linking outbreaks to illegal immigration

Addressing Florida’s recent dip below the 95 % immunization threshold often cited for herd immunity, Donalds attributed measles outbreaks to “rampant illegal immigration” from the prior administration. He cited cases in El Paso, Texas, and Southwest Florida, arguing that large numbers of newcomers who lack vaccination records increase the risk of disease spread.

When pressed on vaccinating incoming immigrants, Donalds replied, “I just want legal immigration with assimilation. We cannot have open borders and we cannot have illegal immigration in our country.”

Rising health‑care costs and price transparency

Beyond vaccines, Donalds said his top health‑care priority is curbing rising consumer expenses. He criticized the Affordable Care Act for contributing to higher premiums and deductibles over the past 15 years.

To address cost growth, Donalds proposed a price‑transparency initiative that would require hospitals and doctors’ offices to publish cash rates for their top 20 services. The goal, he said, is to let patients compare prices directly and make more informed choices.

Implications for Florida voters

Donald’s platform blends traditional conservative themes—limited government, parental rights, and market‑based solutions—with specific policy proposals that could affect everyday Floridians. If elected governor, his administration would likely work with the state legislature to review vaccine mandates, promote parental choice, and push for greater price transparency in health‑care delivery.

Voters will see how these proposals align with broader state efforts to manage public‑health challenges while maintaining individual liberty and fiscal responsibility.
