Crash sidelines David Malukas and Sting Ray Robb at Freedom 250 IndyCar race in Washington

Washington, D.C. – The Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a street‑circuit IndyCar event that winds through the nation’s capital, delivered a dramatic incident early in the race. On lap 36 of the 147‑lap contest, Team Penske driver David Malukas, who had qualified among the top six, entered the final corner and appeared to clip the inside retaining wall.

The impact sent Malukas’ No. 12 Chevrolet careening into the wall with significant force. While the car came to a stop, the situation quickly escalated when Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Sting Ray Robb, running directly behind, arrived at the corner on the racing line unaware of the obstruction.

Collision and Caution

Robb’s No. 77 Chevrolet struck the stationary Malukas car broadside, a T‑bodied impact that prompted race officials to display the third caution of the day. This was the first caution called for anything other than debris on the track.

Both drivers were able to exit their vehicles under their own power, becoming the first two retirements of the afternoon. Medical personnel inspected the cars, but no serious injuries were reported.

Impact on the Race and Drivers’ Seasons

The crash removed two promising competitors from a race that had already drawn significant attention for its challenging downtown layout. Malukas, a 24‑year‑old from Chicago, is in his inaugural season with Team Penske and entered the event third in the championship standings. He has been seeking his first IndyCar victory, a milestone that would have been especially meaningful given the race’s proximity to Capitol Hill.

Robb, a rising talent with Juncos Hollinger Racing, also saw his weekend end abruptly. Both drivers will now focus on repairs and preparation for upcoming events on the IndyCar calendar.

Recent History for Malukas

This incident follows a previous serious crash for Malukas earlier in the season at a race in Nashville. That accident required a hospital visit, but he returned to competition in time for the next event, demonstrating resilience and commitment to his team.

Team Penske and Juncos Hollinger Racing released statements expressing relief that both drivers escaped injury and emphasizing their focus on safety improvements for future street‑circuit races.

Looking Ahead

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix will continue without the two drivers, with the remainder of the field battling for points that could shape the championship race. Fans and local spectators are reminded to stay clear of the track during cautions and to follow official guidance from race officials and city authorities.

Washington’s streets have proven to be a demanding venue for high‑speed competition, and the incident underscores the inherent risks of motorsport. Organizers have pledged to review safety protocols to minimize the chance of similar collisions in future events.
