Local artisans and historians are joining forces for a charitable cause in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania. On display at the Carmichaels Fire Hall is a unique quilt titled “Greene County Mining,” created by Norma Plavic. The quilt incorporates historic photographs and memorabilia from the collection of Brice Rush, illustrating the region’s coal‑mining heritage.
Alongside the mining quilt, visitors will see a patriotic afghan crafted by Linda Rush and a queen‑size Carpenter’s Star quilt made by Ella Haddox. The three pieces highlight the skill of local crafters and celebrate the community’s cultural roots.
Fundraising for seniors
The exhibition is part of the upcoming Bituminous King Coal Show, a regional event that draws attention to the area’s mining legacy. After the show, the quilts will be raffled to benefit the Carmichaels Area Senior Center Activity Group, which operates out of St. Hugh Social Hall. Proceeds will help fund programs, outings, and supplies for the center’s senior members.
Raffle tickets are available for purchase at the fire hall. The winning numbers will be drawn on August 29, and the winners will be announced publicly at the fire hall. All proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the senior center’s activity budget.
Community involvement
Organizers emphasize that the event reflects the strong tradition of volunteerism in Greene County. Residents are encouraged to support the seniors by buying tickets, sharing the news with neighbors, and attending the upcoming Bituminous King Coal Show.
“This is a wonderful way for our community to come together, honor our mining history, and support our elders,” said a representative of the senior center. The event also offers an opportunity for local families to teach younger generations about the region’s past while contributing to a charitable cause.
For more information on ticket availability or to learn about future community projects, residents can contact the Carmichaels Fire Hall during regular business hours.
