Renton police responded to a call about an unresponsive child on the evening of Aug. 20. Officers arrived at a home in the 16700 block of 126th Ave. SE at approximately 9:08 p.m., where medics were already on scene attempting to revive the 8-year-old boy.
Despite the rapid response, the child did not survive. Several family members, including the boy’s parents, were present when authorities arrived. Renton Police Department Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator Sandra Havlik said the investigation has not uncovered any suspicious circumstances and that the incident appears to be accidental.
Family reports and medical findings
The family told investigators that the child was a strong swimmer, though they could not explain how he ended up in the water. The King County Medical Examiner later confirmed the cause of death as drowning.
Police investigation
Renton police have opened a standard investigation into the death, reviewing the scene and speaking with witnesses. No criminal activity has been identified, and officials are treating the case as a tragic accident.
Community response
Neighbors and local residents expressed sympathy for the family on social media, emphasizing the sudden loss and offering prayers. Local churches and community groups have also reached out to provide support and counseling to the grieving family.
Safety reminders
While the investigation continues, officials reminded parents and caregivers of the importance of water safety, especially for children who spend time near pools, bathtubs, or other bodies of water. The Renton Police Department encourages families to keep a close eye on children at all times and to consider swimming lessons and water‑safety education.
The incident underscores the need for vigilance in protecting children from accidental drownings, a leading cause of unintentional injury death among youth nationwide.
