Lee Nguyen, a Plano East Senior High School graduate and former National Gatorade Boys Soccer Player of the Year, has been appointed head coach of Dallas Trinity Football Club. The move marks a homecoming for the North Texas native, who spent more than a decade playing professionally in the Netherlands, Denmark, Vietnam and Major League Soccer before transitioning to coaching.
From Plano to the world and back
Nguyen’s soccer journey began on the fields of Plano East, where he honed his skills in a competitive North Texas environment that demanded year‑round training. After a standout high‑school career, he earned a spot on the U‑20 World Cup team as the only high‑school player, then headed to Indiana University before signing with PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch league.
“It was like being thrown into the deep end,” Nguyen recalled. The jump to European competition forced rapid development, teaching him to thrive when uncomfortable and to learn on the fly.
Coaching experience in the women’s game
Following his playing days, Nguyen spent several seasons on National Women’s Soccer League coaching staffs, most recently with the Dallas Texans during the pandemic. That period gave him a clear sense of what coaching means – implementing ideas, managing personalities and helping players reach their potential.
“That experience brought a lot of clarity,” he said. “It was the bridge between my playing career and this next chapter.”
Building a Dallas Trinity identity
Taking over a team that has reached the playoffs in each of its first two seasons, Nguyen sees both strength and opportunity. He praised the existing core of talented players and said his primary goal is to forge a distinct identity that reflects the club’s values.
“We want to be aggressive, intentional and recognizable,” Nguyen explained. “Our style will feature dominant possession, attacking movement and relentless pressure – a brand of soccer that fans can instantly identify as ‘Lee Nguyen‑coached.’”
Family, faith and community roots
Nguyen emphasized how important it is to be close to family and friends while serving the community that shaped him. He highlighted the influence of his high‑school coach, Rick Woodard, who taught him that leadership is demonstrated daily, and his club coach, Hassan Nazari, who encouraged creative risk‑taking on the field.
“Those lessons stay with me,” Nguyen said. “I’m grateful for the support from Plano East mentors and look forward to giving back to the North Texas soccer community.”
Looking ahead
With a clear vision and a commitment to both winning and beautiful soccer, Nguyen aims to guide Dallas Trinity beyond the playoff threshold and bring a championship home to Dallas. His blend of international experience, women’s‑game insight and deep local ties positions the club for a new era of success.
The appointment underscores the growing strength of soccer in North Texas, a region that continues to produce top talent and attract professional opportunities.
