The Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District is inviting families and students to its sixth annual Halloween Pumpkin Patch, an immersive adventure that runs Friday night, Oct. 28, and Saturday night, Oct. 29, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The event takes place in Anisq’ oyo Park and culminates with a free pumpkin for every participant.
Community‑focused celebration
Event manager Kym Cochran emphasized that the pumpkin patch provides a free, family‑friendly experience while offering a wide range of activities that appeal to all age groups. “You can come to a free, family‑friendly event and still be amazed by the activities offered, no matter what age group,” Cochran said.
Environmental storytelling
The adventure weaves an uplifting environmental narrative, thanks to collaboration with The Environment Makers, Inc., Flying Shade, Fishbon, and other local partners. Visitors will travel through themed stations that highlight the importance of preserving parks and open spaces.
Support from park leadership
UCSB alum and IV Parks office coordinator Taytum Camerun explained that the event is designed to help participants appreciate the region’s natural assets. “This event is going to take them on a journey to allow them to appreciate all our parks and open spaces,” Camerun said.
Isla Vista Recreation and Parks General Manager Kimberly Kiefer noted the timing aligns with the district’s historic roots. “Our park was established as a Special Election on Halloween, so there is history behind that. It is important for parks to be available, creative, and to have fun events like this,” Kiefer added.
Evening of music and dancing
Following the pumpkin patch, the district will host “Park After Dark” on Friday, Oct. 30. The evening will feature live bands on a main stage and a silent disco, extending the celebration of community and outdoor recreation.
Practical details
The pumpkin patch is open from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on both nights. Admission is free, and participants will receive a pumpkin to take home. For additional information, visitors can consult the Isla Vista Parks website at www.ivparks.org.
This family‑oriented event underscores the district’s commitment to providing safe, creative, and educational experiences for the Isla Vista community, reinforcing the value of public parks as gathering places for celebration and learning.
