Lake Tahoe Litter Summit unites 50 leaders to curb trash and protect the lake

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. – On Wednesday, the Thunderbird Lodge hosted the Lake Tahoe Litter Summit, drawing 50 community leaders from local, state and federal agencies, nonprofit groups and businesses. The gathering focused on practical steps to keep the iconic lake pristine and to prevent litter from re‑entering the water.

Deep‑clean efforts and ambitious targets

Colin West, founder and CEO of the nonprofit Clean up the Lake, highlighted the organization’s recent underwater cleanup, which removed 25,281 pounds of debris from the lakebed. Building on that success, West said the group estimates that the second deep‑clean will extract roughly 42,844 pounds of trash and 19,292 distinct items. The operation began in December and continues as volunteers and seasonal staff work beneath the surface.

Policy panels address single‑use plastics and waste infrastructure

The summit opened with two panel discussions. The first tackled single‑use plastics policy, noting that the City of South Lake Tahoe and the Town of Truckee have already banned single‑use water bottles. A similar proposal for eastern Placer County was rejected by the Board of Supervisors, underscoring the need for continued advocacy.

West emphasized the importance of legislation that “goes against litter being created in the environment around Tahoe.” He urged attendees to push for broader bans and to support existing local ordinances that limit disposable plastic use.

Improving waste‑management facilities

The second panel examined whether the basin has sufficient garbage cans, recycling bins and dumpsters. West asked, “Do we have enough of that?” He pointed out that many dumpsters are labeled “anything and everything,” yet residents often overlook that recyclables can be placed there, leading to plastic and other materials being left exposed for wildlife such as bears.

Gavin Feiger of Keep Tahoe Blue, one of the summit’s 50 representatives, warned that “there are not people here paid to clean up your trash.” While seasonal employees and thousands of volunteers assist each year, Feiger stressed that the effort is not free and relies heavily on community support.

Call to action for residents and visitors

Summit organizers urged the public to stay litter‑conscious while exploring the Tahoe Basin. They asked volunteers to donate time and money to local nonprofits that continue the cleanup work. The message resonated with attendees, many of whom pledged to promote responsible waste disposal during peak holiday weekends, when litter spikes as visitors assume cleanup crews will handle their trash.

By combining policy advocacy with hands‑on cleanup, the Lake Tahoe Litter Summit aims to protect the lake’s natural beauty for future generations while reinforcing the community’s role as stewards of the environment.
