Plano Approves New Trader Joe’s Anchor for Promontory Development

Shoppers in Plano will soon have another specialty‑grocery option as the city council gave final approval for a new Trader Joe’s to serve as the anchor tenant of the Promontory on Preston development. The store will be located at 5900 Preston Road, at the intersection of Preston Road and Spring Creek Parkway.

Project details and timeline

According to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, construction on the new Plano Trader Joe’s is expected to begin in December 2026 and finish by July 2027. The mixed‑use site, approved by the council in March, will combine retail space with residential units, creating a walkable neighborhood for families and seniors alike.

The new location will sit roughly two miles north of the existing Trader Joe’s at 2400 Preston Road, giving residents of the Preston Road and Spring Creek Parkway corridor a convenient alternative for their grocery needs.

Frisco proposal still pending

Plano is not the only Collin County city courting the popular grocery chain. In nearby Frisco, developers have submitted plans for a nearly 10‑acre mixed‑use project at the southwest corner of Main Street and Majestic Gardens Drive. The proposal includes a Trader Joe’s, a senior‑living community for active older adults, and open green space.

The Frisco Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a zoning change for the project on July 28, but the development still requires final approval from the Frisco City Council. Under the plan, the senior‑living component cannot open until the grocery store is operational.

Community input and revisions

Both projects have undergone revisions after early feedback from residents and city officials. In Plano, developers added extra parking, expanded landscaping, and more open space to address traffic and neighborhood concerns. A traffic analysis indicated that the new development would generate less traffic than some existing uses on the same parcel.

In Frisco, traffic near Majestic Gardens Drive—especially during school drop‑off and pickup periods—was a key consideration. Adjustments to the site layout and additional parking were incorporated to mitigate potential congestion.

What this means for local families

The new Trader Joe’s aligns with Plano’s broader strategy to support family‑friendly amenities and promote walkable, mixed‑use neighborhoods. By offering another grocery option close to residential areas, the development aims to reduce travel distances for everyday shopping, a benefit for parents juggling work and school schedules.

Both cities anticipate that the projects will create construction jobs in the short term and permanent retail and service positions once the stores open, contributing to local economic growth.

Next steps

Construction on the Plano store will commence this winter, with the city monitoring progress to ensure compliance with the approved plans. Frisco’s City Council is expected to consider the final proposal in the coming weeks; approval would move the project into the construction phase.

Residents can stay informed about the developments by attending future planning commission meetings or checking the cities’ official websites for updates.
