Free Minneapolis Housing Forum Invites Residents to Share Their Stories

Sahan Journal and Mixed Blood Theatre are joining forces for the next installment of their Front Page, Center Stage series, a live‑storytelling event that puts local voices at the center of the conversation. The program, scheduled for Thursday, September 24 at 6 p.m., will focus on the pressing issue of housing affordability in Minnesota.

Why the event matters

Recent data from the Minnesota Housing Partnership shows that more than a quarter of state residents struggle to afford their homes, and nearly half of renters are cost‑burdened. Those numbers translate into families—particularly families of color—having to cut back on essential needs such as food and health care. The event aims to give Minnesotans a platform to discuss how they are coping with these challenges, whether by moving in with relatives, taking on roommates, renting out a bedroom, or downsizing to a smaller unit.

What to expect

Attendees will hear from housing advocates who will share insights on local policies, financing options, and community‑based solutions. The format is interactive: audience members are encouraged to share their own experiences and ask questions. Organizers hope the dialogue will help residents better understand the current housing landscape and identify practical steps they can take.

How to join

The event is free and open to the public. It will be held at Mixed Blood Theatre, located at 1501 S. 4th St. in Minneapolis. While registration is strongly encouraged to help with planning, walk‑ins are welcome. Interested participants can learn more and RSVP through the event page linked on the Sahan Journal website.

About the partners

Mixed Blood Theatre uses theater to disrupt injustice, advance equity, and build community. Their collaboration with Sahan Journal blends journalism and performance art to create a space where residents can speak directly to policymakers, advocates, and each other. Both organizations view affordable housing as a cornerstone of strong families and thriving neighborhoods.

By bringing together personal stories and expert analysis, the September 24 forum seeks to empower Minnesotans to advocate for policies that protect families, uphold the dignity of work, and preserve the stability of neighborhoods across the state.
