One‑Way Traffic Changes Implemented Around Olean High School

Effective Monday, the Village of Olean has altered traffic flow on the two blocks surrounding Olean High School to improve safety and reduce congestion during school hours. North Third Street, which runs between Reed Street and West Sullivan Street, is now a one‑way street heading south. In the opposite direction, North Fourth Street, from West Sullivan Street back to Reed Street, operates as a one‑way street heading north.

Parking Restrictions

To further manage traffic, the village has limited parking to the west side of the roadway. Parking is permitted Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., aligning with the school’s regular schedule. No parking is allowed on holidays, when school activities are typically suspended.

What Drivers Need to Know

Motorists traveling through the area are asked to exercise caution as they adjust to the new pattern. The one‑way design is intended to streamline vehicle movement, reduce the likelihood of accidents near the school’s entrances, and provide clearer routes for parents dropping off and picking up students.

Local law enforcement and school officials will monitor the changes during the first weeks of implementation. Residents and commuters are encouraged to follow posted signage and obey any temporary traffic control devices that may be in place.

Community Response

Parents and neighborhood residents have expressed mixed reactions. Some appreciate the effort to enhance safety for children walking to and from school, while others are concerned about potential inconvenience for drivers accustomed to the previous two‑way flow. The village has scheduled a public forum next month to gather feedback and assess whether additional adjustments are needed.

School administrators have welcomed the changes, noting that a safer traffic environment supports the broader mission of providing a secure learning atmosphere for students. They also reminded families to reinforce safe walking habits and to use designated crosswalks.

Looking Ahead

The traffic pattern revision is part of Olean’s ongoing commitment to improve municipal infrastructure and public safety. City‑government officials plan to review traffic data after a 30‑day period to determine the effectiveness of the one‑way system and to make any necessary refinements.

Drivers are urged to stay informed through the village’s official website and local news outlets for any updates or temporary adjustments that may arise as the community adapts to the new traffic configuration.
